  • Average farm household income in 2004 is KRW29,001,000, 7.9% (KRW2,123,000) up from KRW 26,878,000 in 2003.
    Such increase is due to 14.0% increase of farm income and 1.6% growth of non farm business income.

    Share of non farm business income decreased by 2.1% compared with a year before while share of farm business income increased by 2.3%.
    Korea's dependency level on farming (41.6%) is relatively higher than that of Japan (14.5%) in 2003.

  • Farm business income in 2004 is KRW12,050,000 14.0% (KRW1,478,000) up from KRW10,572,000 in 2003. Farm business income increased because the gross farm receipts rose 12.8% while farm management cost in this year showed relatively small increase (11.8%).

  • Gross farm receipts in 2004 is KRW26,623,000 increasing by 12.8% (KRW3,012,000) from KRW23,611,000 in 2003. It is because the import of farm products increased generally including rice (7.5%), vegetable (14.3%) and fruit (29.0%) although the import of livestock showed little decrease (-0.7%).

  • Out of gross income of agricultural products, import of rice, vegetable, livestock product, fruits and others account for 32.5%, 24.6%, 18.9%, 11.1%, and 12.9% respectively.
  • As a consequence of the market liberalization, the shares of rice and fruit import out of the total have decreased by 7.8%p and 1.6%p respectively since 1998. On the other hand, percentage of vegetable and livestock product import increased by 0.4% and 6.6%p.

  • Farm management cost in 2004 is KRW14,572,000 rising by 11.8% (KRW1,533,000) from KRW13,039,000 in 2003.
    The major causes of such increase are increase of labor cost (17.9%), and repair and farm appliances cost (9.6%) and decrease of the rental cost (13.0%).

  • Non-farm business income in 2004 is KRW9,544,000 growing by 1.6% (KRW147,000) from year 2003 (KRW9,397,000).
    Non-farm business income grew because non business income increased by 1.0% (KRW70,000) and side business income increased by 3.4% (KRW76,000).
