Quarantine

• Animal and plant quarantine in the modern sense first started in Korea in around 1910. Currently, there are various quarantine related laws, notifications, rules and import hygiene requirements being implemented.

• The record of animal quarantine for export/import is insignificant. It is conducted mostly for racehorses, breeding stocks and pets. Our major livestock items of export are pork meat and animal skin as well as fur.

• Import and export increase of livestock and poultry products has raised the demand for quarantine. Especially, as the importance of animal quarantine is emphasized because of the outbreak of such bad animal diseases as foot-and-mount disease, mad cow disease and zoonosis, livestock and poultry products carried by travelers are also strictly controlled.

• Due to the peninsula ' s long north south stretch and topographic complexity, there are wide variations in floral distribution.

• IWhile many alpine plants are found in the north and high mountain areas, the central part and the western low-lands have the predominantly broad-leaved deciduous vegetation.It is easily spread and settled in Korea if new pests are introduced. Harmful foreign pests such as Wooly Apple Aphid, The codiplosis Japonensis, Hyphantria Cunea, Lissorphoptrus Oryzophilus, and trialeurodes Vaporariorum which were introduced in Korea when there was no strict plant quarantine system cause huge demage on our plants.

• Referring to the reference on plant quarantine, quarantine for plants for import increased greatly. Based on the number, plant quarantine for export grew by 257.8% in 2000 from 1990 whereas plant quarantine for import rose by 624.1%, which indicates the ratio of plant quarantine for import is rapidly increasing.
